The postpartum period is a time of rest and recovery. More often than not, the demands of being a new mother trump the mother’s needs to rest and recover after birth.

In our fast-paced life in an ever-changing world, the needs of our bodies have not changed. Full-term pregnancy still takes 40 weeks, and so will the time needed for your body to rest. While the West have forgotten the days of lying-in and the ways of postpartum traditions of the olden days, let me help you with your healing and recovery journey.

In the Malay tradition, the new mother goes through pantang, a ‘confinement period’ of 44 days. This is a dedicated time for the new mother to rest, recover and recuperate. It is a time for healing, restoring her femininity and reshaping her body. And I will help you receive the same treatment using the very same herbs used in ancient traditional methods that are still very much practised in South East Asia today and gaining popularity around the world.

Women are often shamed for desiring to have their pre-pregnancy body back. I will provide you with a safe space to discuss your body.

Many even fear asking the safe and natural ways to get back in shape that they miss the most opportune time to reshape their body, which is in the first 44-100 days after birth. With me, you will be free to ask any questions without judgement and free to discuss your worries, concerns, and desires about your old body. I will share the safe and natural techniques you can do right after birth.

With my busy training schedule to train other birth workers around the world with this beauty and health regime, I am offering very limited postpartum service in the Washington D.C metro area (DMV). No other organ requires healing more than your womb. 9 months of giving life, nurturing and providing for your baby, and now that your baby has left the life-giving space, your womb needs to heal.

We will start by warming your lower back, abdomen, and pelvic areas with ‘hot’ oil’, infused with herbs to give a soothing warm sensation. While we rub the oil all over your pelvis and abdominal area, we will perform sengkak. This is a womb lifting and repositioning massage technique that will gently release the tensions, and guide your womb back into its ‘nest’ safely, back in the original location in the pelvic bowl.

Using tools like herbal balls or stones, we will perform tungku. The transference of heat deep into your womb can speed up healing. The gentle heat compression and the womb lifting is a crucial step in womb recovery. It assists in expelling all the leftover pregnancy material, blood, and tissues left behind after your pregnancy.

In the past, the vagina was the only safe passageway for your baby to come into the world. This is where the seed of life enters your body, and through this very same passage, your baby enters the world. 

This is a sacred passage and needs to be given its due care and attention. It is not just a passageway for your baby, but the perineum and vaginal area is also your centre for pleasure. The healing, restoring and retightening of the vagina is crucial after birth. 

9 out of 10 first time mothers who have a vaginal birth will experience a vaginal tear, perineal lacerations or episiotomy. Although trauma and injury to the pelvic floor, vagina and perineum are inevitable, there are many things that you can do to speed up the recovery.

Medicinal herbs with antiseptic and analgesic properties can help prevent infections, reduce swelling, itch and bad odour. We will prepare the herbal concoction for you to perform a rendaman faraj, sitz bath, prepare the pencuci cebok, feminine herbal wash, and show you the postpartum way to clean and cleanse yourself after every toilet visit.

Your body has gone through tremendous change in the past 9 months. Birth is the most transcendental and monumental human experience you would have experienced, no matter how many times. And every time your baby leaves your body, your body will require the same level of care and healing. 

Humans need touch, and touch is an important aspect of healing. Studies has shown, babies need physical human touch to survive. Ofter we forget, mothers too need touch. And touch is healing. We will start by rubbing hot oil gently all over the body. We do not work your muscles and joints like massage, but gently rubbing hot oil all over your body to provide soothing, calming and relaxing strokes while the oil works to warm your body.

To take the experience one level up, we will be performing tuam. Using a set of the heated herbal ball, we will compress it all over your body. The heat, oils and aroma from the herbal ball will have a calmative effect and alleviate any pain and tension you have in your body.

We will prepare a special herbal concoction for you to have a herbal bath. The medicinal properties in the herbs that we use are specifically blended for postpartum recovery. Mandian herba, an herbal bath is an important component of postpartum care to help reduce anxiety and nervousness, prevent depression and relieve bodily pain and stress.

When we boil the herbs, the aroma and the oils are released from plants and infused into the herbal water. When you bathe in this herbal water, the medicinal properties and the goodness from the plants will be absorbed by your body to re-energize and rejuvenate your body. Tanggas or ganggang, is a health and beauty routine in the Malay tradition. Women typically perform vaginal steaming after every menses, for reproductive health-related ailments or during special occasions such as wedding night and after postpartum period.

During postpartum, the vaginal steam helps with loosening mucus and assists the womb in getting rid of the lochia, old blood and excess vaginal discharge and old blood. The herbs used have medicinal properties to help heal the vaginal wall and the perineum area.

I will be bringing all the necessary tools and herbs, including the vaginal steam chair, to your home so you can get the full benefits of this postpartum treatment at the comfort of your own home. I will guide you through the proper seating technique, posture, breathing and exercises you can do to maximise the benefits, while making sure you are always comfortable and feel safe.

In the Malay postpartum tradition, the floral baths and postpartum scrub is done to mark the end of the postpartum period. As part of the closing ceremony, the new mother is scrubbed, lulur and bathed, mandi bunga.

We will prepare your floral baths with fresh flowers, lime and rose water. We will also provide you with a scrub that is specially formulated for the postpartum body. While the scrub will remove dead skin cells to make your skin feels silky and smooth, the aromatic smell of the flowers will get rid of any herbal smell and perfumes your body.
